Updated October 2026. Australia’s National Minimum Wage is AUD $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per 38-hour week from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026. This is a minimum for employees who are not covered by an award or enterprise agreement, not a universal rate for every occupation.
Who receives the national minimum wage?
Most Australian employees are covered by a modern award or enterprise agreement that sets their minimum pay and other conditions. The national minimum wage generally applies to award- and agreement-free employees. Special rates may apply in particular circumstances.
What about casual workers?
The national minimum casual rate, where applicable, is $33.05 per hour including 25% casual loading. Award-covered workers may have different rates and penalty arrangements. Use the official Fair Work pay calculator to check your specific role.
Do migrant workers have the same rights?
Yes. Migrant workers and visa holders generally have the same minimum workplace rights and protections as other Australian employees. An employer cannot cancel a worker’s visa; visa decisions are made by Home Affairs.
Compare a job offer properly
- Identify the applicable award or enterprise agreement.
- Confirm the ordinary hourly rate and overtime or penalty rates.
- Ask whether the annual salary includes superannuation.
- Check allowances, roster hours and paid leave.
- Keep copies of your employment contract and payslips.
